چکیده

The effects of droplet size on light scattering by polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films have been studied theoretically and experimentally. Rayleigh-Gans calculations predict that, provided the droplets scatter independently, backscattering will be maximum at wavelength ,'l when the droplet radius is about /2/7. However, correlation effects become noticeable for droplet volume fractions n above about 0.2 and shift the radius for maximum backscattering to about /2/5 as n increases to 0.5. These calculations are consistent with hemispherical transmittance and reflectance measurements on PDLC films in which multiple scattering is known to be important. These measurements indicate that solar attenuation by PDLC films will probably be maximized by choosing droplet size to maximize backscattering of visible radiation. This choice also increases solar attenuation by absorption of radiation trapped inside a PDLC film by total internal reflection.

Single-Layered Microscale PDLC Films for Electro-Optical Modulation of Laser Radiation∗

We report on low-voltage, high-contrast amplitude/phase modulators of laser radiation on the basis of microscale polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) single layers providing interference contrast enhancement. The modulators were prepared from liquid crystal (LC) E7 in the solid matrix of UV-cured polymer NOA65. Operating at low voltages, E7/NOA65 single-layered PDLC films of thickness 10–25 ...

A Study on the Electro-Optical Properties of Thiol-Ene Polymer Dispersed Cholesteric Liquid Crystal (PDChLC) Films.

In this study, a polymer dispersed cholesteric liquid crystal (PDChLC) film obtained via a one-step fabrication technique based on photopolymerization of a thiol-acrylate reaction system was prepared and characterized for the first time. The effects of the chiral dopant, the influence of thiol monomer functionality and content on the morphology and subsequent performance of the PDChLC films wer...

1 The POLICRYPS structure In the last decades, great attention has been devoted to the realization of switchable holographic structures in liquid crystalline composite materials [1]. In particular, it has been shown that diffraction gratings based on Holographic Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystals (HPDLC), that means droplets of Nematic Liquid Crystal (NLC) dispersed in a polymer matrix (see inse...

Electrohydrodynamics-Induced Abnormal Electro-Optic Characteristics in a Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystal Film

This study demonstrates for the first time abnormal electro-optic (EO) characteristics induced by electrohydrodynamics (EHD) in a polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) film in the presence of a low-frequency (1 kHz) AC voltage. Large LC droplets (20−40 μm) buried in the film can be obtained after the illumination of one UV light with a weak intensity (~0.96 mW/cm2) for 12 h. This film exhibit...

Analysis of Polymer-Dispersed Liquid Crystals by Infrared Spectroscopy

FT-IR microspectroscopy is used to compare the polymer and liquid crystal droplet regions within polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) films. Thermoplastic polymer matrix PDLCs contain a higher amount of liquid crystal within the polymer regions than do thermoset polymer matrix films. IR functional group images of a droplet show characteristic textures corresponding to the visual images of th...
